Welcome to the School of Computer Science

Here, we are more than just a place to study – we are a community that cares deeply about your personal and academic growth. We take the time to get to know each of our students as individuals, understanding your unique ambitions, strengths, and dreams. From day one, you’ll feel the difference, as we support you not just as a learner, but as a person.

Our programmes are hands-on and practical, designed to immerse you in the latest developments in technology. But what makes us truly special is how we blend this with a personalised approach. Our dedicated staff will work closely with you, offering guidance and support at every step, ensuring you have the confidence and skills to succeed in whichever area of computer science excites you the most.

We’ve created an environment where everyone is encouraged to grow at their own pace, where your voice is heard, and where we help you navigate the exciting and sometimes daunting world of computer science. Beyond the classroom, we’re passionate about involving our students in cutting-edge research. From artificial intelligence to cybersecurity and data science, our School is at the forefront of innovative research projects that are shaping the future of technology. You’ll have the chance to get involved, working alongside expert academics on real-world challenges, and contributing to exciting discoveries that can make a real impact on society.

We also offer a wide range of super-curricular activities that complement your studies. These include hackathons, coding clubs, guest lectures from industry leaders, and collaborative projects with local tech companies. These opportunities not only allow you to deepen your knowledge and skills but also to connect with fellow students and professionals, broadening your horizons and preparing you for the next steps in your career.

I invite you to explore all that we offer, and I look forward to meeting you personally as you embark on your journey with us. Together, we can achieve great things.

Make more happen with our specialist facilities

Based at our new Leeds City Campus at Trevelyan Square, our Computer Science students will have access to the following:

The Apporto Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution provides a powerful, and flexible teaching aid. Whether from their personal or university devices, each student will have access to their own Virtual Machine (VM) at home, on the move, or in the labs. This empowers students to acquire a mix of virtual and hands-on experience.

There are 2 high-specification Computer Science Laboratories that each contain 32 student positions. Most modules will be taught in these labs supported by the Apporto VDI.

The Cyber Security Lab contains 11 student positions. This lab will form the hub for all cyber security/networking-related modules and will be supported by access to physical equipment for a hands-on experience.

Each student position has a 27” UDH/4K monitor, and the latest Optiplex Plus 7020 (RAM: 16 GB DDR5, Processor: i5 14600 vPro) desktop workstation. Ideal for scrutinising lines of code, configuring network devices via console, or colour coordinating a new app.

AV and Display Equipment to support teaching:

With three LG 55’’ UHD/4K (3840 x 2160, 60Hz) wall-mounted displays per lab, students can easily follow every slide, video, or live demonstration from their seated position. Crisp audio playback can be heard in all locations in the room, or to remote attendees via Teams. Additionally, ceiling-mounted Aver (Pan Tilt Zoom) PTZ Cameras with AI auto tracking, 12x optical zoom, and 4K resolution will empower lesson recording technologies such as Panopto and Teams. Whether studying remotely or revising for end-of-term assessments, students can revisit every second of past lectures with eyewatering quality.
