Award-winning playwright and University Chancellor, Deborah McAndrew, heads the line-up at Leeds Trinity University's annual Writers' Festival on Wednesday 13 March 2019.

Now in its 15th year, the Writers' Festival includes opportunities to work with professional writers, attend writing workshops and hear readings from featured writers.

Playwright, actor, Creative Director and University Chancellor Deborah will deliver a keynote speech entitled 'WHY WRITE', around the mysterious compulsion to write, and a workshop on 'Writing for the theatre'.

Deborah said: "I am honoured to be supporting the Writers' Festival this year; getting more involved with students, staff, alumni and the local writing community at Leeds Trinity. Writing has always been a huge part of my life - so to address a room of writers in my capacity as Chancellor is wonderful. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and hearing their stories as well as reflecting on and sharing my own experiences as a writer."

More than 100 aspiring and established writers are expected to attend the event at Leeds Trinity University next month. As well as the keynote speech, delegates can choose from a range of workshops led by professional writers, and there will be opportunities for networking, buying books and listening to readings.

Workshops this year are themed around writing for the theatre and TV, creative inspiration and challenging self-imposed limitations, imagery and the senses, the power of nature within fiction, walking to access new parts of our imagination, the chemistry of language and the meaning of home. Alongside Deborah, the workshops are delivered by published graduates from Leeds Trinity's alumni community and current PhD students.

Professor Oz Hardwick, Principal Lecturer in English at Leeds Trinity University, said: "We are so excited to be welcoming back some of our alumni who are making such an impact in the worlds of fiction, poetry and television, and it's great that they want to come and share their expertise and experience. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and enjoying another Writers' Festival."

This year's event follows a successful 'Write through the winter' series of weekend workshops and space-to-write days, led by Leeds Trinity alumni to support writers in a creative and friendly environment on campus.
