Leeds Trinity University is to host a free community Creative Writing Workshop and Walk in partnership with Leeds 2023 Year of Culture. The ‘Writing Yourself into Nature’ workshop and walk focuses on unlocking creativity through nature.

The activity will take place on Wednesday 10 May between 10.00am and 1.00pm and will be hosted by Oz Hardwick, Professor of Creative Writing, and Leeds Trinity alumni Clare Wigzell, a poet who writes poetry in response to place, nature, and art.

The workshop is inspired by American author Rebecca Solnit, who believes that walking has a vital role to play in helping us to link to the earth, our inner and outer world and accessing new parts of our imagination.

Attendees at the event, which is open to all, will first be introduced to psychogeography and mindfulness on the University’s Horsforth campus before being taken on a light walk in a nearby woodland. On their return, time will be given to produce a piece of writing based on the experience, with Professor Oz Hardwick and Poet Clare Wigzell on hand to assist.

Participants will be able to submit their writing for a series of posters which will be included in the Horsforth Walk of Art over the weekend of Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 July.

Professor Oz Hardwick said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with Leeds 2023 to offer this workshop, which will make the most of our beautiful location. Leeds Trinity is known for its excellence in Creative Writing, and it’s wonderful to be welcoming Clare, who’s one of our MA graduates, back to share her expertise with participants.”

Clare Wigzell added: “The workshop will provide a creative space where our interaction with each other and with nature produces surprising results. I hope the workshop re-connects people to their bodies and their experiences. This can help us to find new and exciting creative expression.”

Leeds 2023 is a year-long celebration of culture, communities and people in the city which aims to give everyone a chance to express who they are and take part in cultural experiences. For more information visit the website.
