Leeds Trinity University has increased its research opportunities by offering a new place on its full-time funded PhD Studentships programme to support a PhD in Computer Science.

The PhD Studentships programme will now see five students embark on individual PhD theses at the University, each fully funded by Leeds Trinity. Students will also receive a stipend to financially support them during the programme.

The programme has increased from four to five studentships this year, with the additional studentship specifically awarded to support a PhD in Computer Science. This will be supervised by Professor Yanguo Jing, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Computing and Digital Industries at Leeds Trinity.

The ringfenced PhD Studentship in Computer Science will relate to a specific topic, such as the study of public opinion and trends on social networks using machine learning; people behaviour simulation and prediction using machine learning; or abnormalities detection using deep learning for medical images.

Professor Yanguo Jing, Dean of the Faculty of Business, Computing and Digital Industries, said: “Leeds Trinity University is continuing to grow research excellence in key strategic areas, and this is emphasised by the introduction of another PhD Studentship offering in Computer Science which I am looking forward to overseeing.

“Each PhD Studentship will be appointed in our areas of strength and reflect the continued emphasis on high quality research within our University. This programme is important to our strategic ambitions of achieving research degree awarding powers in the next few years.”

Applications are also invited to study in one of Leeds Trinity’s three Faculties: the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences; the Institute of Childhood and Education; and the Faculty of Business, Computing and Digital Industries.

Students will go through an application process to outline their research proposals and abilities to deliver them. They will then be matched to expert research staff from across the University for the duration of the three-year programme. These staff have extensive professional experience as active researchers and leaders in their fields.

Tom Hall-Say, who started the PhD Studentship Programme at Leeds Trinity University in 2022, said: “I was delighted to join Leeds Trinity University as a postgraduate research student having successfully proposed a research project in the area of environmental physiology and drowning prevention.

“Based within the Faculty of Social and Health Sciences, I joined Professor Martin Barwood and his team, experts working on drowning prevention and water safety research – an area of significant interest to me due to my prior employment, and experiences in, aquatic environments.”

One of the studentships will be exclusively offered to a Black or Black (mixed) heritage candidate who must qualify for home (UK) fees. This ringfenced studentship will help widen participation at the highest level of research and continue Leeds Trinity’s work towards race equality, following its achievement of the Race Equality Charter Bronze award in 2020.
