University donates radio equipment to benefit local Bradford community

Leeds Trinity University’s Media Services department has donated radio equipment to support local Bradford-based community interest company, MAK Digital.

Radio equipment including computer screen and radio desk.

The equipment was previously installed in the University’s Radio Studio 3 Suite, which is now being developed into a podcast studio and edit suite. Although no longer suitable for course requirements at Leeds Trinity, the Media Services team wanted to put the equipment to good use by donating it to a local radio project.

MAK Digital, which is based in Bradford, has received the specialist radio desk to help with their work providing studio equipment for community radio stations.

The company has been working with numerous community radio projects for several years, including programming for events such as Radio Ramadhan, Milad, Miraj and Hajj Radio.

MAK Digital also provides basic training in radio production skills but currently only has access to one studio. It will look to use the equipment donated by Leeds Trinity to build a new studio in September, to keep up with the demand from community groups and students.

Masood Sadiq, MAK Digital Project Manager and former guest lecturer in Radio Production at Leeds Trinity University, said: “I am delighted that the University has chosen us as the recipient of the Sonifex Radio Desk, which will be a great asset for us in providing training and studio facilities for community-based short-term licenses in Bradford.”

He added: “We would like to thank the team for making this decision and can assure them that the community will benefit immensely.”

Mark Willett, Senior Technician at Leeds Trinity University, said: “In today’s throw-away society, it can be hard to find people who appreciate the value and longevity of older equipment.

“As we are unable to list used items on platforms like eBay due to electrical rules and regulations, it breaks our hearts to part with equipment that, whilst it may no longer be suitable here at Leeds Trinity, is in full working order.”

He added: “We are delighted to have found a new home for the studio equipment that will benefit so many people in the Bradford area that MAK Digital serves.”
