Leeds Trinity is committed to making studying abroad affordable for every student.

Our Study Abroad team will work with you on an individual basis, advising on suitable destinations and funding schemes.

Tuition fees

Students participating in study abroad will pay tuition fees the same way as any other student, directly to Leeds Trinity University. The tuition fee for the ‘sandwich year’ abroad is capped at 15% of the normal fee.

You will not pay any tuition fees to the partner institution. Some universities may however charge for additional things such as books, Student Union membership and International Student Orientation Programme.

Student grants and loans

UK students can usually apply for a Maintenance Loan to help pay for living costs while studying abroad and a Tuition Fee Loan. You may be entitled to a travel grant to help with some extra costs.

Partner University Scholarships

Some of our partner institutions offer merit-based scholarships for incoming exchange students. We help you to apply for these alongside any other funding.

Turing Scheme

The majority of students going abroad for a semester or a year will likely be eligible for a grant from the UK Government’s global mobility programme, The Turing Scheme. LTU has partnered with several international volunteering organisations, and students taking part in programmes of 4 weeks or more with these organisations and destinations may also be eligible for Turing funding.

These grants are paid in addition to any student finance and do not have to be paid back. Grant rates depend on the destination country, the length of your placement abroad and your individual circumstances. Please note, that Turing funding is not guaranteed and is allocated to universities on a yearly basis.

Turing funding rates

Below are the rates applicable in the Academic Year 2023/24 (depending on how many weeks are spent abroad). Destination countries are grouped based on the cost of living.

Non-disadvantaged participant

• 4-8 weeks abroad in a Group 1 country - £136.25 per week
• 4-8 weeks abroad in a Group 2 or 3 country - £120.00 per week 
• 2-12 months abroad in a Group 1 country - £380.00 per week
• 2-12 months abroad in a Group 2 or 3 country - £335.00 per week

Disadvantaged participant

• 4-8 weeks abroad in a Group 1 country - £163.75 per week
• 4-8 weeks abroad in a Group 2 or 3 country - £147.50 per week 
• 2-12 months abroad in a Group 1 country - £490.00 per week
• 2-12 months abroad in a Group 2 or 3 country - £445.00 per week

Disadvantaged participant criteria are based on the Turing Programme Guide, and include:

• Students with an annual household income of £25,000 or less
• Students receiving Universal Credit or income-related benefits
• Care leavers and students who are care-experienced
• Students who have caring responsibilities
• Estranged Students
• Refugees and asylum seekers
