National Professional Qualifications (NPQs) are flexible professional development courses for teachers and leaders to improve skills, progress careers and deliver improved outcomes for schools.

Leeds Trinity University delivers NPQs in partnership with the Church of England Education Office and the Teacher Development Trust.

NPQ in Senior Leadership

This NPQ is delivered in partnership with the Church of England Education Office.

This qualification is for teachers who are or are aspiring to be a senior leader with cross-school responsibilities.

The aim of the NPQSL is to enable participants to develop the relevant expertise and provide approaches to enable continuous improvement across the school.  

Following completion of the NPQSL, participants will have covered the following ten areas:

  1. School Culture
  2. Teaching
  3. Curriculum and Assessment
  4. Behaviour
  5. Additional and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
  6. Professional Development
  7. Organisation Management
  8. Implementation
  9. Working in Partnership
  10. Governance and Accountability

NPQ in Early Years Leadership

This NPQ is delivered in partnership with the Teacher Development Trust.

This qualification is aimed at people already in leadership roles who want to progress to become managers of nurseries, headteachers or leaders within school-based maintained nurseries, childminders, or other Foundation stage leaders such as reception class teachers or co-ordinators.

The programme aims to develop your skills in leadership, connecting you to the latest research and best practice.

Following completion of the NPQEYL, participants will have covered the following seven areas:

  1. Culture
  2. Child Development, Curriculum and Assessment
  3. Additional and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
  4. Professional Development
  5. Organisational Management
  6. Implementation
  7. Working in Partnership

NPQ in Leading Literacy

This NPQ is delivered in partnership with the Teacher Development Trust.

Suitable for teachers and leaders who have a responsibility for leading literacy, this course aims to develop your confidence and skills in improving your pupils’ language, reading and writing skills. You’ll also learn how to implement literacy improvement strategies across your school, year group, key stage or phase.

Following completion of the NPQLL, participants will have covered the following six areas:

  1. Teaching
  2. Developing Language
  3. Developing Reading
  4. Developing Writing
  5. Professional Development
  6. Implementation

NPQ SENCO

This new NPQ is the statutory required qualification for school, nursery and college SENCOs.

Course dates and information

The NPQ programmes run in Spring (usually February/March) and Autumn (usually October/November). 

  • NPQ in Senior Leadership: 18 months comprising 20 hours of self-led study, 44 hours of live teaching, and 12 hours of coaching.

  • NPQ in Early Years Leadership: 18 months comprising 1-2 hours of self-led study per week, plus a mix of flexible online learning and discussion, virtual and face-to-face workshops. 
  • NPQ in Leading Literacy: 12 months comprising 1-2 hours of self-led study per week, plus a mix of flexible online learning and discussion, virtual and face-to-face workshops.

Access to funding requires all participants to be registered with the Teaching Regulation Agency. You can check and update your record via the Teaching Regulation Agency Self-Service Portal.

How to Register

Staff wishing to undertake an NPQ must be sponsored by a senior member of staff who will be asked to authorise their application.
