As summer graduation looms and dissertations are submitted, students at Leeds Trinity University are preparing to step into the professional world. To support this transition, Careers+Placements recently hosted the EmployAbility: Launch Your Graduate Career event, offering valuable insights and actionable advice to soon-to-be graduates from local organisations such as Asda, Emerging Futures, Liberty Global, Pentest People and Sewell Wallis.

The event was incredibly insightful and featured CV and interview tips shared by staff from the various organisations, a Q&A panel and networking lunch - creating lots of opportunities to gain expert advice.

Writing a standout CV is essential in the job search process. Some of the practical tips shared at the event included:

Tailor Your CV: Customise your CV for each job application. With CV matching technology becoming more widely used, highlight relevant competencies and experiences that match the job description.

Clear Structure: Use a clean and easy-to-read layout. Sections should be clearly defined, making it easy for employers to find the information they need to understand if you could be a good fit for the role.

Prominent and Up-to-Date Contact Information: Make sure your details are visible on your CV but double check they are current. Missing a call or an email from a potential employer can mean missing out on an opportunity.

Navigating interviews in today’s work environment requires preparation and authenticity. Here are some key takeaways from the event:

Research the Company and Prepare Questions: This shows a proactive approach and having insightful questions ready for your interview demonstrates your genuine interest in the role.

Take Your Time: Collect your thoughts before answering a question. This ensures your response is well-considered and reflects your abilities.

Be Yourself: Authenticity is crucial. Employers value genuine personalities and want to see the real you. With multiple interviews often taking place, making a memorable impression is key.

Networking continues to be essential for career development. The event emphasised various ways to expand your professional network:

In-Person Events: Whether on campus or off campus, take the opportunity to attend industry events, seminars and careers fairs. Face-to-face interactions can leave a lasting impression.

Online Webinars: Participate in webinars and virtual events. These platforms provide access to a broader range of professionals and opportunities.

Reach Out: Don’t hesitate to contact individuals in roles you aspire to. Whether it’s someone whose career path you admire or a potential mentor, building these connections can open doors.

As Leeds Trinity University students gear up for graduation, the EmployAbility event has helped equipped them with effective tools and insights. By following these tips on CV writing, interviewing, and networking, graduates can confidently embark on their professional journeys, ready to make their mark in the world.
