Welcome to the School of Health and Life Sciences

Welcome to the School of Health and Life Sciences at Leeds Trinity University. We are ambitious and want to help transform the health and wellbeing of our region, supporting communities we serve, in promoting and protecting their health, by creating cutting-edge graduates and Health and Life Science professionals of the future. The field of Health and Life Sciences is changing rapidly, and graduates who are professionally competent, curious and culturally aware are needed to help lead these changes, and this is where we come in.

Our mission is to actively find talent in our local communities and we are committed to widening access to people who may not traditionally consider higher education, providing the opportunity for personal growth and social mobility. We have a range of exciting programmes and opportunities to help you become the best Health and Life Sciences graduate you can be; one who is sought by our employer partners and makes a difference to our communities.

There are two subject areas in the School, Nursing and Biomedical Sciences. Our staff are highly experienced professionals who bring a wealth of clinical and research experience to the School. Our staff are linked into the local community by engaging in research, knowledge exchange and scholarly activity - helping to tackle some of the real-world problems we are facing.

We have very strong partnerships with employers and practice partners to ensure our programmes are contemporary and co-designed with them. You will get opportunities not just to study your chosen programme, but also to study with others at LTU to learn with, from and about each other.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in clubs and societies, and take part in social activities. We want the student voice to be heard because your experience is important to us.

Study courses accredited by professional bodies

Our Biomedical Science programme at Leeds Trinity University is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).

IBMS degree accreditation guarantees that a degree programme meets the academic requirements of the standards of proficiency set by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) for biomedical scientists. This ensures that students receive a comprehensive, research-based scientific education and gain practical skills and experience that are highly valued by employers.

Our Nursing courses are approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). On successful completion of our Nursing courses, graduates are eligible to apply to register with the NMC.

A School with connections

Our School works with several NHS Trusts, including hospitals and community, as well organisations in the private, independent and voluntary sectors. This ensures nursing students receive a diverse range of placement experiences while they study with us.

The Biomedical Science programme has been co-created with regional employers including NHS Biomedical Scientists, Industry stakeholders and recent graduates from IBMS accredited Biomedical Science programmes to ensure the teaching will result in high levels of student satisfaction and graduates who are highly employable, practically trained problem-solvers.

Through both the Biomed’s Employer Liaison Group and Visiting Lecturer network we have many links with local NHS trusts such as Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust, Barnsley Hospital NHS Trust and Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust. As well as local biotech industries such as LabCorp, Aptamer Group, Lhasa, or Abbingdon Health.

Our Nursing facilities are situated in the new Health and Life Science building designed for teaching in the healthcare setting.

Facilities include a:

  • Six-bed simulated ward
  • Simulated HDU/ICU bay with an assisted bathroom
  • Community living flat
  • Clinical skills teaching room
  • Large lecture theatre which can be adapted for clinical teaching.

All simulation rooms are equipped with simulation technology such as medical manikins, task trainers and real-life medical equipment. We also use SMOTS camera technology for simulation and assessment.
