About this course
During your Foundation Year, you will undertake modules to enable you to enhance your academic skills and equip you with the tools you’ll need to study with confidence. You’ll carry out a personal project so you can study an area of interest related to your chosen future subject specialisation.
You’ll be introduced to various types of media, both in theory and practice, and will develop an understanding of the skills and concepts required by the creative industries. You’ll explore historical approaches towards images and the social power they embody and will undertake an individual or group project to produce work that reflects the culture of 'image'.
Following successful completion of the Foundation Year, you’ll progress onto the first year of our English and Media BA Joint (Hons) degree.
Through this course, we will show you how great writers, from Shakespeare to contemporary slam poets, have used words to express themselves and to influence the world around them. At the same time, you’ll study how words, images, and technology are combined to such powerful effect in digital media.
You'll develop practical skills in media production, using the latest media formatting equipment and software. You can specialise in a particular area of production, whether that’s radio and podcasts, digital effects or transmedia.
You'll also have the opportunity to create your own literature and learn how to give and receive criticism in creative writing workshops.
Putting your creative and practical skills into practice, you'll complete professional work placements. You'll gain invaluable professional experience and make contacts that could help you build your future career.
Whether you want to work in the media, train to be a teacher, or work in a field where good communication skills are needed, English and Media has a lot to offer you.
